If caught in the early stage called gingivitis, gum disease can usually be reversed with improved oral hygiene habits. However, advanced cases of gum disease called periodontitis will require treatment from a qualified periodontist to be resolved or managed. Here’s a quick look at how a Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) works and who it can help.

What Is Periodontitis?

Gum disease starts as inflammation called gingivitis, and it can usually be addressed with better oral care habits. Untreated gum disease, however, will eventually develop into a destructive infection called periodontitis which can show itself through symptoms like:

  • Swelling or redness of the gum tissue
  • Visible buildups of plaque and tartar on the teeth
  • Gum recession
  • Loose teeth
  • Persistent bad breath (halitosis)
  • Discomfort when chewing
  • Jawbone erosion
  • Permanent tooth loss

If left unaddressed, periodontitis will continue to worsen and spread. In severe cases, it can lead to dangerous secondary infections like sepsis, which is a life-threatening medical condition also known as blood poisoning.

What Is LANAP

A Laser-Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP) is a surgical process designed to comfortably and effectively address advanced gum disease. The treatment always begins with your periodontist administering an appropriate anesthetic to ensure you feel no pain. When you are ready, your oral care provider will use a precise surgical laser to remove infected gum tissue and kill harmful germs.

The laser will cauterize the treated tissue as it works, which will limit bleeding, help prevent postoperative infections, and set the patient up for a smooth healing process. Laser-based gum surgery is generally a far gentler process than traditional surgical methods. Recovering after a LANAP procedure usually takes about one day as opposed to the two to four weeks usually required by conventional gum disease treatments.

Is LANAP a Suitable Treatment for Me?

LANAP is generally recommended for those whose gums have pockets that are at least five millimeters deep or who have loose teeth due to infection. The procedure can be safely performed on many patients who have health conditions like pregnancy and diabetes.

Don’t let gum disease ruin your smile and your oral health. Consulting with your dentist can help you understand the best way to eliminate a nasty oral infection.
