It’s believed that nearly half of those over 30 have some form of it. With that said, you may then wonder whether kids can get it or not. After all, their teeth are more susceptible to attacks from bacteria in their mouth, so what about these soft tissues? Here’s what you should know and how to spot this dental problem.

So, Can Kids Get Gum Disease?

In short, yes! Gum disease starts as gingivitis, the initial stage of the infection. This can happen as early as infancy, but it can then progress to periodontitis as their baby teeth erupt. While you may wish that kids won’t have to worry about this condition, they can develop it for a few reasons. These are several to know:

Poor dental hygiene

Eating too much sugary food and drinks

Genetics

Misalignment and malocclusion

What Are the Signs of Gum Disease in Kids?

In the beginning stage, you might notice the soft tissues in their mouth are more tender, inflamed, or red. They might also have persistent bad breath as well. As it progresses, you may start to see their gums receding from their baby teeth or shifting with abnormal spacing. There might even be changes in their bite or jaw alignment in a few cases. Pus between their teeth and gumline may also be possible.

How Is Gum Disease Treated?

If your kids have the signs above, then you should get them checked out right away by their periodontist. They will be able to get the situation sorted out by offering personalized solutions.

For instance, gingivitis is often able to be reversed by following proper oral hygiene and routine cleanings. If a bit more work is needed, then a scaling and root planing may be recommended. This will remove bacteria buildup from underneath the gumline while also smoothing out the roots to encourage the gums to reattach.

Once they get the treatment they need, you can feel confident knowing that their grin is in great shape and pain-free while they grow up.

About the Practice

Dr. Jonathan Ross earned his dental degree from the Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine. He later received his periodontal specialty training from the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Ross is proud to offer a wide range of periodontal services to the Mayfield Heights community.
